Datadog is a SaaS observability platform that puts metrics, logs, traces, application performance monitoring, real user monitoring, synthetic testing and security signals in one place, with one-click correlation between them. None of the open-source platforms match that breadth inside a single product.
The Datadog Agent installs on your hosts and starts collecting immediately. Over 900 vendor-backed integrations cover Kubernetes, serverless platforms, cloud services, databases and the rest of a modern stack, so most of an estate is monitored without writing collectors. It also runs continuous configuration and compliance checks against PCI DSS, SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR and CIS, and retains records for infrastructure that no longer exists, which is exactly when you need them during a post-incident review.
Two things to weigh before choosing it, and we would rather raise them now than after the third invoice. Datadog is hosted, so your telemetry leaves your premises and leaves the country, which matters if you carry data residency obligations. And it is priced per host and per gigabyte ingested, so log volume is what surprises people. Both are manageable, but they are design decisions rather than details.
