What this covers
Nagios is the oldest platform on this page, and we will be straightforward about what that means. Its check-and-notify model is dated next to a modern time-series system, and if you are starting from nothing today we would usually point you at Prometheus or Zabbix instead.
But a great many organisations already run Nagios, with years of carefully tuned checks representing real institutional knowledge about what breaks and what matters. Throwing that away to chase a newer product is rarely the right call. Supporting it, patching it and extending it usually is, and that is the engagement we most often take on.
There are two products and the difference is not cosmetic. Nagios Core is free and open source, configured in text files with a minimal web interface, and it takes command-line competence to run well. Nagios XI is commercial, built on Core, and adds a web interface, configuration wizards, reporting and dashboards. We work with both. The current XI line is 2026R1, which updated Core to 4.5.13 and added a configuration wizard for Red Hat OpenShift, a useful tie-in if you also run OpenShift.
Monitoring is plugin-based: the scheduler runs check plugins on an interval, reads their exit codes and notifies. NRPE, the Nagios Remote Plugin Executor, runs those plugins on remote Linux and Unix hosts so local resources like CPU and memory can be checked, and Nagios Exchange carries a large library of community plugins for almost anything else.
